Football boss gets the boot live on TV

It seems bad enough to be pulled into a room and fired on the spot, but that’s no comparison to the seemingly publicly humiliating exit Brighton & Hove Albion Manager, Gustavo Poyet, got from the Championship team last night. Poyet was in a BBC studio in Salford as a guest pundit discussing the Spain v Nigeria Confederations Cup game when he was passed a copy of the club’s statement, released on its website, announcing Poyet’s termination.

Therefore, instead of discussing the first half of football, at half time Poyet found himself commenting on his own departure from Brighton. “I think the BBC have got a great story”, Poyet said. “A manager getting released from his employment during the time of a programme is quite surprising.”

The club’s statement, which seemed to contradict Poyet’s claim that the dismissal was news to him, said that “Gus Poyet has been informed today by Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club’s internal disciplinary panel that his employment has been terminated with immediate effect. This followed his suspension, an investigation, and a subsequent formal disciplinary process.”

Poyet said that he would appeal against the decision to dismiss him. However, in reality it seems unlikely that he will be stepping back out as Brighton manager. It appears that he is now free to take on other jobs. He said, “I need to inform myself well about what I can do and what I cannot do fro the next few days before the appeal. From what I read from the statement, I am unemployed. But it’s difficult to say.”
