Many employers have non-competes and their post-termination restrictions in their employment contracts. The idea is to protect the business from the risks that departing employees pose, particularly in today's mobile labour market.
These restrictions might prevent employees from poaching clients or staff, or prevent them working for a competitor business (or setting up their own) for a certain period at the end of their employment. Non-competes, as this latter type are known, are popular but notoriously difficult to enforce.
