The nation’s media have reported that West Mercia police were called to investigate builders wolf-whistling at a woman who had the audacity to walk past a construction site in Worcester recently.
The woman, who claims to have suffered daily taunts from the builders, secretly filmed their behaviour and made a complaint to police. According to reports, they have now stopped taunting her after police paid them a visit.
We couldn’t help but to notice one of the builder’s alleged justification for his actions: “Wolf-whistling is part and parcel of working on a site, it's complimenting a girl.”
We probably won’t be rolling that particular defence out the next time we find ourselves defending an employer in an Employment Tribunal, at least not unless we can magically travel back 30 odd years (which is about the last time anyone thought that defence might be a good idea).
