Disgruntled staff looking for bigger payouts at tribunals are increasingly claiming whistleblowing as a method of securing potentially unlimited awards.
Research by GQ Employment law found that more than one in 10 tribunal claims in 2012/13 included an application under the Public Interest Disclosure Act (PIDA) — an increase of almost 40pc on two years before. The PIDA encourages whistleblowers to reveal wrongdoing in the workplace by offering them protection from reprisals by their employer.
